Theory

Theory is a requirement for all students undertaking graded music examinations. Passing ABRSM Grade 5 Theory is essential before progressing to Grade 6 practical; this requirement is set by the ABRSM music boards and not by Keenan School of Music, Castleknock.

Students may choose to complete theory courses externally, which is fully acceptable. In such cases, please provide details including the grade achieved, examination board, and the name of the teacher or institution attended.

It is important for students pursuing theory with different schools or boards to understand that standards can vary between music boards. For example, RIAM Grade 5 is not equivalent to ABRSM Grade 5.
